Where FDM wins in vehicle work

Vehicle work lives on short iterations and parts that no catalogue sells. That is exactly what printing is for.

Intake and air ducting

Adapters, resonators and ducts in geometries you cannot bend or weld. In ASA or ABS, temperature-checked for the mounting position.

Brackets and mounts

Sensor brackets, cable mounts and ECU nests. Contoured to tube profiles and sheet metal without drilling the vehicle.

Covers and trim

Protective covers, bezels and housings for conversions. Optionally sanded, primed and painted for visible areas.

Mockups and fit checks

Dimensionally accurate dummies check packaging and clearance before the expensive final part is ordered. Cheap to repeat when the design moves.

Suitable materials

In a vehicle, temperature, UV and vibration decide. ASA for exterior parts, PC for heat, PA12-CF for stiff brackets, TPU for bumpers and seals.

What we need for vehicle parts

3D printing in automotive: what matters in practice

In vehicles the material choice is almost always driven by temperature. An interior part behind glass reaches 70 to 80 degrees in summer, an engine bay part considerably more. That rules PETG out for many positions, while ASA and PC hold up permanently and PA12 or PA12-CF are used where stiffness and wear resistance are needed as well.

The second point is load direction. Brackets, consoles and clamps in FDM almost always fail along the layer plane. We orient such parts so the main load acts across the layers, and use heat-set inserts for threads rather than cutting them into the plastic.

For visible parts and test equipment in vehicle work, flame retardancy is added. Where UL94 V-0 approval is required, what counts is the material datasheet rather than the process. For that we use PC FR or ABS FR and document the lot used so the rating stays traceable later.

Automotive FAQ

Which vehicle parts suit FDM printing?
Anything without permanent pressure or fuel contact where design freedom matters: intake and ducting parts, sensor and wiring brackets, covers, adapters and fit-check mockups. Continuous load above 100 °C and direct media contact are the critical cases, we review those individually.
How heat resistant are printed parts?
ASA and ABS handle roughly 90 to 100 °C depending on orientation and load, PC goes well beyond. In the engine bay position matters more than resin alone: a bracket five centimetres from the manifold is a different part than one at the firewall.
Are the parts UV and weather resistant?
For exterior use we recommend ASA, which is built for weathering and UV. ABS ages visibly in sunlight. Visible parts with high surface requirements can be primed and painted.
Can you supply small series for vehicle projects?
Yes. Typical volumes are 5 to 200 parts, for conversion series, prototype fleets or event equipment. We document material batch and print parameters so reorders come out identical.
