Choosing the right 3D printing material for engineering applications
A practical comparison of the 20+ industrial FDM materials we print - heat resistance, UV stability, mechanical strength, and the use cases each one actually wins.
How to choose a material in 4 questions
Most material decisions come down to four constraints. Answer them in order and the field narrows quickly.
How hot will it get?
Below 60 °C → almost any plastic works. 60–100 °C → ABS, ASA, PETG, PA12. 100–140 °C → PC, PC-ABS, PA12-CF. Above 140 °C → PA6-CF or PPA-CF.
Is it outdoors or UV-exposed?
ASA and ASA-CF are the only materials we recommend for sustained sunlight. PLA chalks within weeks, ABS yellows in months.
What loads will it see?
Cosmetic or light loads → PLA / PETG. Real mechanical loads → PA12, PC, PC-ABS. Replacing machined metal → PA12-CF, PA6-CF, PPA-CF.
Any regulatory requirement?
Flame retardance for electrical enclosures → PC FR UL94 or ABS-FR. Food contact, medical, or aerospace require traceable resin - ask us about lots and certificates.
Performance properties, explained
The four metrics engineers ask us about most - and what the numbers actually mean for a finished part.
Heat resistance (HDT)
Heat Deflection Temperature is the temperature at which a loaded part starts to sag. PLA fails at 55 °C; PC holds at 115 °C; PPA-CF survives 180 °C - useful for under-hood automotive or injection-mold tooling.
UV stability
Sunlight breaks polymer chains. ASA is engineered for it and looks new after years outdoors. PLA, ABS and PA12 degrade and discolor - coat them or stay indoors.
Tensile strength & rigidity
Carbon-fiber composites (PA12-CF, PPA-CF) reach 100–130 MPa tensile and replace machined aluminum on jigs and brackets at a fraction of the weight.
Impact & flame retardance
Polycarbonate absorbs impact without shattering. PC FR UL94 adds a V-0 flame-retardant rating for electrical enclosures and rail/aero interiors.

When to pick our top engineering materials
PA12-CF - the metal-replacement workhorse
Carbon-fiber-filled nylon 12. Extremely rigid, dimensionally stable, and survives 140 °C. Our most-ordered material for jigs, fixtures, drone frames and aerospace brackets.
PPA-CF - aerospace-grade
Polyphthalamide with chopped carbon fiber. Holds shape past 180 °C, resists fuels and oils, and outperforms PA6-CF on long-term creep. The right answer for under-hood and engine-bay parts.
ASA - the outdoor specialist
ABS-like mechanicals with genuine UV stability. Use it for outdoor housings, automotive trim, signage, antenna mounts - anywhere a part sits in sunlight.
PC & PC FR UL94 - impact and electrical
Polycarbonate is one of the toughest amorphous thermoplastics in FDM. The flame-retardant UL94-rated grade is required for many electrical, rail and transit enclosures.
