How to prepare an industrial 3D printing RFQ

A price is comparable only when every supplier quotes the same part, scope and requirements. A sound RFQ separates mandatory requirements from preferences and states open points explicitly.

In brief

A STEP file, drawing of critical features, quantity, application, environment and date are usually enough to start. Missing details should be marked open rather than silently assumed.

Technical basis

The 3D model describes geometry. It does not automatically describe function, acceptable deviation or surface.

  • Include STEP as an editable solid model; use STL or 3MF only when tessellation is sufficiently fine.
  • Mark critical dimensions with datum, tolerance and inspection method in a short drawing.
  • Tie the CAD revision and file name together unambiguously.

Use and load case

Material and orientation can only be assessed when the real duty is known.

  • State temperature range, UV, moisture and media contact.
  • Describe the load: static, impact, cyclic or wear.
  • State mating parts, assembly sequence and accessible faces.

Quantity and delivery model

A one-off, first batch and recurring call-off are planned differently.

Frequently asked questions

Is an STL file enough for a quote?

It may be enough for production only. STEP is usually better for DFM changes and clear revision control because surfaces and solids are retained.

Must every dimension have a tolerance?

No. Only function-critical features should be tightly toleranced. The rest uses a general agreement suitable for the process.

Can the material remain open?

Yes, if service conditions and exclusions are stated. The supplier can then make a reasoned material recommendation.

How should variants be requested?

Give each variant a unique identifier, revision and quantity. A shared table prevents files and purchase lines being mixed up.

What does not belong in the RFQ?

Avoid unverified assumptions about a specific print profile. Describe the required function and ask for the process proposal to be justified.

Apply the requirement to a real part

Send the CAD file, quantity and service conditions. We review manufacturability, material, orientation and useful inspection features and prepare a quote.
