First-article approval for FDM production parts
A sound first article confirms more than printability. It links the tested state to an unambiguous product revision, defined process and clear acceptance criteria.
In brief
Approval covers a combination of product, process and inspection. If a function-relevant element changes, assess whether approval still applies.
Preparation
Inspection scope and acceptance criteria are agreed before the sample is produced.
- Identify revision and part status clearly.
- Prioritise critical dimensions and functional checks.
- Use production-intent orientation, material and finishing.
Approval decision
A deviation is not automatically scrap, but it must be assessed consciously.
- Approved
- All agreed criteria met
- Conditionally approved
- Named deviation accepted for a limited scope
- Not approved
- Correction and a new sample required
Transfer to production
Approval becomes the reference for repeat orders.
- Archive approved files and inspection records together.
- Assess CAD, material or process changes for approval relevance.
- Use boundary samples only when purpose and validity are clear.
