How to select and qualify an FDM supplier
A machine list and filament range say little about repeatable production. What matters is how requirements are clarified, changes controlled and deviations handled.
In brief
Do not assess the sample price alone. Check whether quote, approval, production and repeat order are joined by a traceable information flow.
Before the sample
A suitable supplier identifies limits and questions before production.
- Are CAD, load case and critical features technically reviewed?
- Are material and process alternatives explained with their consequences?
- Are scope, finishing and inspection clear in the quote?
From sample to production
Approval must describe the state that was actually tested.
- Product
- Part number, CAD revision, drawing
- Process
- Material, orientation, relevant parameters
- Inspection
- Features, method, sample and acceptance criterion
Changes and disruptions
Supplier quality is most visible when something does not go to plan.
- Material or parameter changes are agreed in advance.
- Deviating parts remain clearly separated from the approved batch.
- Cause, containment and restart are documented.
