How individual prints become a series

The difference between repeated one-off printing and true series production lies in planning before the first part. A series starts with fixing a batch size that matches build plate capacity and the desired material lot. We try to produce a series from a single material lot wherever possible, because filament lots can differ slightly in color and moisture content. That matters more for cosmetic parts than purely functional ones, but the basic rule holds for both: one batch, one lot, one parameter set.

During the run we measure defined dimensions on the first part, a part from the middle of the run and the last part. These three measurement points catch the most common failure sources: a wrong initial calibration shows up on the first part, a gradual drift from nozzle wear or temperature fluctuation shows up in the middle, and a problem toward the end of the run, for example declining filament quality near the end of the spool, shows up on the last part. If a value falls outside tolerance, the run is stopped and the cause investigated, rather than finishing the whole batch and checking only at the end.

For repeat orders we keep material, process parameters and part number from the original order on file, so a batch reordered six months later runs through the same process. At what quantity injection molding pays off depends on tooling cost, geometry complexity and expected annual volume, but usually falls in the range of several thousand parts per geometry and year. Below that threshold a mold does not pay for itself, and 3D printing remains the more economical option, precisely because there is no tooling cost and geometry changes need no new mold. For very small quantities under ten parts, our small batch page is usually the more relevant starting point.

How do you ensure part 1 and part 500 match?
We plan the build as a single lot with one material batch, measure defined dimensions on the first, a middle and the last part of the run, and log deviations. If a value drifts, the run is stopped rather than printed to the end.
At what quantity does injection molding become cheaper than 3D printing?
This depends heavily on geometry and tooling cost, but usually falls somewhere in the range of several thousand parts per geometry and year. Below that threshold an injection mold does not pay for itself, and 3D printing stays more economical. We flag it when a request falls into that range.
How are series parts packaged and labelled?
Depending on agreement, individually or in batches with a label showing part number, material, lot number and order date, so a repeat order can be matched unambiguously.
Is a repeat order months later still identical?
We keep material, process parameters and part number from the original order on file and print repeat orders with the same settings. Minor differences in color batch or ambient conditions can occur for purely cosmetic features, functional dimensions stay within the documented tolerance band.
