Incoming inspection for 3D printed parts

Incoming inspection does not mean repeating every supplier inspection. It confirms that the correct, undamaged and approved goods arrived and that agreed records are present.

In brief

Check identity and condition first, then function and dimensions based on risk. Deviating parts remain clearly quarantined until disposition.

Identity and scope

Many failures arise from mix-ups, not the printing process.

  • Check part number, revision, quantity and variant.
  • Compare part or container identification with the order.
  • Expect inspection and material records only when agreed.

Visual and functional inspection

Focus inspection on features that transport or process can affect.

Transport
Breakage, deformation, abrasion, loose inserts
Production
Layer separation, incomplete contour, support residue
Assembly
Seating, clearance, fasteners, mating part

Handle deviations

A good report enables rapid technical assessment.

  • Record affected quantity and identification.
  • Take photos with scale and clear part ID.
  • Use, rework or return only after disposition.

Frequently asked questions

Which dimensions belong in incoming inspection?

Features critical to assembly or function that should not rely solely on supplier records. Scope is defined by risk.

Are visible layer lines a defect?

No, they are inherent to the process. A defect exists when the agreed surface or function is not met, such as delamination or major discontinuities.

How should quarantined parts be stored?

Separate from released goods, clearly identified and protected against unintended use.

Should packaging be retained?

For transport damage, yes, until cause and responsibility are clarified. Photograph labels and lot details.

What if a dimension deviates without a functional problem?

Do not accept it silently. Assess and record the deviation so drawing, inspection plan and process do not remain inconsistent.
